![]() ![]() The probability that a group of resource users will self-organize as a control system is higher when these subsystem variables fall within a certain range. The four variables of interest include the size of the resource system, the number of users, the amount of knowledge sharing among different resource user's mental models, and finally, the level of importance of the resource to each user. Of particular interest to us are four subsystem variables that scale the social and geographic dimensions of a decision making situation in different ways. In fact, sustainability science and environmental history have both shown through historical case studies that government intervention into the self-organizing capabilities of an otherwise resilient social-ecological system sometimes accelerates its deterioration ( Earle 1988).ġ.2 Ostrom ( 2009) highlighted ten subsystem variables explaining self-organizing behavior leading to a sustainable social-ecological system. Systems theorists have long held that complex systems exhibit the capacity to evolve internal control systems and essentially self-regulate ( Bennet and Chorley 1978). Based on extensive case studies, sustainability science finds that human resource users may sometimes self-organize as a control system to make sure that the social-ecological system of which they are a dependent part remains resilient in a way they prefer ( Ostrom 2009 Agrawal 2001). One of the interesting developments in sustainability science is the emergence of an alternate theory. The Three Domains of Sustainability: Sustainability Science, Sustainability Information Science, and Sustainability Managementġ.1 A widely accepted theory is that when people are left to their own devices they will simply consume the resources at their disposal and deteriorate their environment unless governments impose a control system to prevent an unavoidable tragedy of the commons. Social Actors, Public Participation, Decision Making, Sustainability Management, Geodesign, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) We discuss the results of the experiment and conclude with prospects for research on the social and geographic dimensions of self-organizing behavior in social-ecological systems spanning wide regional areas. The theory of self-organizing resource users does not specify how a group of social actors' preconceptions about a situation is interdependent with their social and geographic orientation to that situation. However, our expectations were not met by our findings, which we trace all the way back to our conceptual model and a theoretical gap in sustainability science. We expected that increasing the social and geographic distribution of agents and the diversity of their preconceptions would have a significant impact on agent consensus about which situations to change and which ones not to change. The three factors included 1) the social and geographic distribution of agents (local, regional, international levels), 2) abundance of agents (low, medium, high levels), and 3) diversity of preconceptions (blank slate, clone, social actor levels). We used a factorial research design to vary three interdependent factors each with three different levels. Geographically-distributed agents interacted through an online platform similar to that used in online field experiments with actual human subjects. ![]() ![]() As opposed to studying self-organizing behavior at the scale of a local 'commons', our interest was in how online technology supports the self-organizing behavior of agents distributed over a wide regional area, like a watershed or river basin. The goal of the simulation was for agents to reach consensus about which situations in their regional environment to change and which ones not to change as part of a geodesign process for improving water quality in the greater Puget Sound region. Agents were modeled as socially intelligent actors who communicate using a system of symbols. This article reports on an agent-based simulation of public participation in decision making about sustainability management. ![]() ![]() ![]() Our experienced & friendly staff are highly knowledgeable & are prepared to go above & beyond in meeting the needs of our customers. If they wanted to they could sort the file by the logon attempts that involved the most, unique workstations and see why that user jumped around to so many workstations during the day. This way the app owners will get a CSV file and instead of counting the workstations by hand, they can just look and see that it was six different workstations. What I want to do is add a column which is the value of the unique workstations. For example, the first row shows user "X" had 9 logon attempts over 6 different workstations on Monday. The Unique Workstations column is the distinct workstations used by a user to try and logon to an application we're looking at. The case statements will always result in 1 or null, so the results can only be something like 1,1,null,1,null. The Logon Attempts are the total number of logon attempts (success or failure) for a particular user during one day (provided it's five or more). SELECT COUNT( DISTINCT CASE WHEN status true THEN 1 END ) AS trues, COUNT( DISTINCT CASE WHEN status false THEN 1 END ) AS false FROM table This will always be 1 or 0. Accenture research shows that travel expenses comprise 10% to 12% of a business's annual budget and represent about 1% of its revenue. While the general and administrative bucket is often where companies start cost reduction measures, the items in the selling expense bucket are the biggest opportunities to better control costs.įor instance, travel expenses are a selling expense that represents a cost-containment opportunity. Tracking selling expenses is important for tax compliance and for ensuring the business is correctly calculating deductions to reduce its tax burden. Benefits of Selling Expensesīy tracking selling expenses, a business can: Correctly assess its tax burden However, within the SG&A bucket, one study showed that best-in-class wholesale distribution companies concentrate spending in the selling category, including making investments in the sales force, account management, and technology to support it all. It will differ according to the industry as well as the consistency of the gross profit number overall. There is no hard and fast number on what that should be. Divide SG&A by gross profit (revenue minus the cost of goods sold) to get the percentage of the gross profit that is going into SG&A expenses. One way to use selling expenses as part of profitability analysis is the ratio of SG&A to sales. Controlling these costs as demand for products or services grows is crucial to a business's profitability, but finding a balance is crucial to sustaining that growth. Their mention is a staple on earnings calls, lately in the context of a phrase like “discretionary spending cuts” in relation to those line items. In addition to reducing labor and materials costs, SG&A expenses are an excellent place to look for savings opportunities because they take up so much of a company’s operating budget. Any sales commissions you pay to a salesperson. They can be broken down into direct and indirect selling expenses:ĭirect selling expenses are incurred when a product or service is sold. These are any sales or marketing expenses your business incurs. Selling expenses are three kinds of expenses that make up a company’s operating expenses. Selling, General, and Administrative expenses, aka SG & A, are the daily operating costs of running a business that isn’t related to producing a good or service. Since they are not allocated to goods produced, these costs never appear in the cost of inventory on a firm’s balance sheet.Click here for free trial What is SG & A Expenses? Since nonmanufacturing overhead costs are treated as period costs, they are not allocated to goods produced, as would be the case with factory overhead costs. These costs are reported on a company’s income statement below the cost of goods sold, and are usually charged to expense as incurred. Presentation of Nonmanufacturing Overhead Costs Examples of Nonmanufacturing Overhead CostsĮxamples of nonmanufacturing overhead costs are the compensation of sales and marketing personnel, rent and utility costs on administrative facilities, interest on loans and lines of credit, marketing costs, liability insurance, and office supplies. Instead, product price points should be set high enough to ensure that a business generates a profit after the full amount of these costs have been incurred. Nonmanufacturing overhead costs support critical parts of a business, such as its sales and marketing activities, and so should not be considered discretionary costs. Nonmanufacturing overhead costs include selling, general and administrative costs, as well as financing costs. Since they are not associated with products, these costs are not allocated to products in the determination of the cost of ending inventory or the cost of goods sold. Nonmanufacturing overhead costs are expenditures not associated with product costs. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s a real-time teamwork application which is widely used in Fortune 500 companies for their team communication.
