![]() ![]() Bette was an active PTA member for 17 straight years and only missed 6 meetings during that time. When the PTA found it necessary to raise funds, Bette was instrumental in starting the International Smorgasbord, which ran annually for 50 years as the PTA’s largest fundraising event, drawing thousands of people from across the Treasure Valley. They raised three children who followed in their mother’s footsteps by participating in numerous sports, clubs, and activities at Homedale High School.īette joined the PTA in 1952 and she quickly started her long run as Room Mother for all 3 kids. Soon she met her future husband of 59 years, Ben, on a blind date to a Boise High School basketball game.īen and Bette eventually moved to Homedale to farm next to her brother Tom. While in Boise, Bette became well known as a talented jitterbug dancer. At both schools, she was involved with several student clubs and activities including the yearbook staff, cheer, basketball, track, softball and tap dancing.Īfter high school, Bette worked as a housekeeper before working for Fox Photography Studio in Boise where she honed her skills in photography and film development. Prior to her senior year, Bette’s family moved to Homedale, where she completed her high school education. When old enough, all 3 siblings worked at the café, and later, worked on their stepfather’s (Sam Akichika) farm on West Mountain road. In Cascade, one of the activities Bette enjoyed the most was picking huckleberries on West Mountain and this would later grow into a family tradition that continues to this day.Īs a student, Bette loved to write fiction and poetry and was also a sportswriter for the Cascade High School newspaper. When Bette was 2 years old, her family moved to Cascade to operate the only restaurant in town, called the Boston Café. She was the youngest of 3 children, with sister Mary Chiyoko and brother Tom Shizuo. Bette was born on Decemto Chiyono Shimizu Arima and Niroku Arima at their Boise family home. These principles help shape them into well rounded and productive members of the community.Bette (Shigeko) Uda passed away peacefully on Augin Eagle, Idaho at the age of 95. I believe that participation in performing arts teaches students collaboration, discipline, and commitment. Thompson considers Idaho his home state and counts his time teaching in Middleton as a true privilege! Even though he didn't grow up in Idaho, Mr. His son is currently enrolled at the College of Idaho and is pursuing a degree in Accounting. His daughter recently graduated from College of Idaho and is pursuing her Masters Degree in Education at NNU. He considers himself the luckiest man alive because he has the opportunity to spend time every day on the commute from Nampa to Middleton with his wife, Sarah (former MMS 8th grade ELA teacher 1993 - 2017) who has become an Instructional Specialist for MSD. When he's not at school, he enjoys reading, woodworking, camping, fishing, and hiking. Thompson has served as a Choir Festival Manager, Middle School Chairperson and District 3 Website Manager for the last several years. Teaching has pushed him to become more involved with the valley's Music organization, District 3 Music Educators. Music and emotions are a part of who we are whether we choose to pursue them as a career or enjoy our talents as a hobby or pastime. Thompson's hope is to demonstrate the love and enjoyment of music and drama. He looks forward to another fantastic year of performing opportunities for his students. Thompson became certified in Theatrical Arts and took on a new role as the MMS Drama teacher. After the retirement of the long time Drama teacher, Mr. In 2006, he moved his teaching talents to Middleton, teaching Choir and General Music at MMS. He began teaching Band, Choir, Jazz Band, Pep Band and Marching Band to 6th -12th grade students. Thompson was hired for his first full-time teaching job in Homedale. His career took a detour into the building industry for several years before he began substituting at Middleton Middle School. In 1991, he began his education at Northwest Nazarene University and graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in (K-12) Music Education. Thompson was raised in Oregon and spent time in John Day, Portland and Eugene. Over the years he learned many lessons from his dad about teaching, performing and collaborating with others. Growing up, he spent a great deal of time with his father, a Band teacher, at the school, football field, and in the Band room asking to help and to play the instruments. His journey to becoming a teacher began early in life. Thompson teaches Choir, Drama and 6th grade Music Appreciation at MMS.
